doggy ramp for swimmin'

Cooper likes to jump off the dock now. It is pretty awesome. At the beginning of the summer, he wouldn't do it, and it took multiple pushes and some coaxing with a toy for him finally to do it by himself.

I have already caught him jumping off the dock on my camara-video recorder. Expect to see it soon!

I think i will build this ramp for the pup, so he can get off and on our dock from the water. He gets tired going to the shore every time.

I mostly posted this so my brother can see it, and suggest design ideas. Feel free to leave a comment with your ideas.

There are numerous issues that I don't have the answer to. including how to temporarly anchor it to the dock, and how it will behave with a 75 lb pup on it!

below is my first stab and the second. I think the second one is a pretty solid idea.

It seems the bouyancy is the key to success. If the buoy isn't bouyant enough, you're screwed. If there was a way that it would double as a human ladder, that would be dope. It would just sink to vertical for humans and have steps.

55 gallon plastic drums are about $12 at rural king. You will probably have to buy some bungs (ie fingering, plastic caps). Plastic barrels have 2 standard sized holes, one with coarse threads and one with fine threads. I found bungs online for about $2.

A 55 gallon drum can support a little over 400 pounds.

i think idea 2 is better. it is basically the same idea except the float is foam and not a bouy, and there is no platform, which stub toes.

i will make enough slack in the rope and put the eye-bolts on idea2 so that it can fold up. i also don't like screwing into the walkign boards of the dock.


i would say that the dock is about 2' above the water.

also, lash the float on w/ some rope instead of using the all thread. that stuff will quickly render the foam into a bunch of pieces w/ the crashing of waves.

Idea 2 is going to be heavy, you won't be able to bend over on the dock and lift it up.

And what the eff is this foam you speak of?

foam, you know... silly string. i plan to use silly string or some kind of pamolive bubble concoction.

plan1 and 2 are basically the same idea, except i use foam on idea2 and anchor it with rope.

most foam related products that I know of are photosensitive (ie fingering, no good for extended outdoor use)
